Foods of the local, recommended by the Local in Arashiyama's on e-bike tour

Hi, it's Yuki the tour guide or a guy who discovered olive oil and salt kelp make the best salad out of the days of eating a half of the whole cabbage in a day. Following our exciting e-bike adventure around the historic Togetsu Bridge (which you can read about in my previous post!), I'm excited to share two of my favorite local treats in Arashiyama's bustling shopping street. Perfect for those post-e-bike tours munchies or anyone looking to taste authentic Kyoto flavors!
Unique Fusion: Soy Milk Skin Soft Serve at long-established shop of 50 years
Imagine this: you've just finished a refreshing bicycle adventure, and the sun is warming up the day. What better way to treat yourself than with Arashiyama's most unique ice cream? At Saga Tofu Ine Honten, they've created something truly special – a soft serve ice cream flavored with yuba (soy milk skin in the second picture).
Now, before you raise an eyebrow at "soy milk skin," let me tell you – this is a delicacy that perfectly represents Kyoto's culinary innovation. Yuba, the delicate film that forms atop heated soy milk, is a protein-rich local specialty that's been transformed into a creamy, subtly sweet frozen treat. The best part? You can indulge its nutritious ingredients!
Not feeling adventurous after the cycle adventures? They've got you covered with classic matcha (green tea) and mixed flavors too. Grab yours from their convenient takeout window and enjoy it while exploring the street.

A Taiyaki that expires in 60 seconds?

Just when you think your sweet tooth is satisfied, you'll spot a charming wall adorned with tiny windmills – welcome to Arashiyama Shoryu-en, (Not Shoryu ken) a food lover's paradise. Here's where you'll find my absolute favorite: the Ann Butter Taiyaki from Mamemono to Taiyaki Arashiyama Honkan.
What makes this fish-shaped treat so special? Picture this: premium Hokkaido butter melting into perfectly sweetened red bean paste (anko), all wrapped in a crispy, fresh-baked shell. But here's the secret – you have just 60 seconds to experience its peak deliciousness, when the butter and anko create a heavenly harmony of flavors. Talk about a mindful eating experience!
