Things That a Tour Guide Learned Today: Sharing (some of the many) Fascinating Variations of Buddhism

This is a series of me sharing what I learned about Japanese culture in order to become a better tour guide. And I am Yuki the tour guide or a movie geek who started to watch Poker Face and thought "Huh, I think I just found a hidden gem".

Anyway, Japanese Buddhism is a rich tapestry of traditions that have evolved over centuries, blending teachings from India, China, and Korea with Japan’s unique culture. But did you also know there are multiple schools of Buddhism in Japan, each offering profound insights into life and spirituality? Let’s dive into some of the most prominent Japanese Buddhist traditions. What does it do with our e-bike tour? I don't know! Let's figure it out!

Feel free to leave a comment, we would love to hear what you think or answer any questions you have!

1/6. Nichiren Buddhism: Empowerment Through the Lotus Sutra

Nichiren Buddhism centers on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, which it considers the ultimate expression of the Buddha’s teachings. Nichiren, the school’s founder, emphasized that enlightenment is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or circumstances. The practice of chanting “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo” is at the heart of this school, believed to unlock inner potential and transform life’s challenges.

However my sensei taught me in the school, this is the only Buddhism branch that severely criticized the other branch of Buddhism and the founder: Nichiren sent the criticism to the Shogun at the time and got exiled. Karma.

2/6. Jōdo-shū: The Path to the Pure Land

Jōdo-shū, or the Pure Land School, was founded by Hōnen in the 12th century. This tradition emphasizes faith in Amida Buddha and reciting his name (“Namu Amida Butsu”) as the path to rebirth in the Pure Land, a realm of peace and enlightenment. Its simplicity and accessibility have made it one of Japan’s most popular Buddhist traditions.

3/6. Jōdo Shinshū: True Pure Land Buddhism

Jōdo Shinshū, or True Pure Land Buddhism, is an offshoot of Jōdo-shū founded by Shinran, a disciple of Hōnen. Shinran believed that salvation comes solely through the grace of Amida Buddha, emphasizing deep trust and faith over ritualistic practices. This school is particularly known for its focus on inner devotion and the belief that enlightenment is possible for all

My previous work was an university: Ryukoku University and it was founded by this religion. Surprisingly, you can find some of the Japanese universities are related to religions.

4/6. Zen Buddhism: The Art of Mindfulness

Zen Buddhism, a branch of Mahāyāna, flourished in Japan after being introduced from China. Known for its emphasis on meditation, mindfulness, and simplicity, Zen practices such as zazen (seated meditation) and koans (paradoxical questions) aim to bring practitioners closer to enlightenment. Its minimalist aesthetic has also profoundly influenced Japanese art and culture.

In this Zen Buddhism, there are three more branch: Rinzai Shu, Obaku Shu, and Soto Shu. And we visit Rinzai Shu's biggest temple: Tenryuji temple in our tour :)

5/6. Shingon Buddhism: The Esoteric Path

Shingon Buddhism, introduced by Kūkai in the 9th century, is a form of Vajrayāna Buddhism. Known for its esoteric rituals, mantra chanting, and mandalas, Shingon emphasizes the attainment of enlightenment through mystical practices. Its teachings are often considered secret, passed down from teacher to disciple.

Alright, I covered some detail of Buddhism but I don't think I can remember all of people. Then what stuck in your mind?
